About
us
During 2006-2008, I had the opportunity to work with the Maternity Waiting Home (Silk Home) Project supporting village women in 3 Lao southern provinces. Our 17 homes provide a place for pregnant women with their families to stay prior to having a safe, clean birth. (Laos has the highest maternal mortality ratio in Southeast Asia.) They receive food, proper health care & education and household utensils.
We provided income generating activity workshops teaching women how to dye and weave with silk & cotton. One special item, the baby carrier (jia) is woven on a lap loom in bright colorful cotton, similar to the Mexican rebozo. (See Products page) These are being used by Canadian doulas and midwives at births.
Our goal is to create an international market that can generate income for the women to improve their quality of life and create sustainability for the Maternity Waiting Homes. A portion of the profits goes back into the MWH project.
We are thrilled to be contributing towards supporting these wonderful women, their families, communities and their incredible culture.
